Sainte-Cécile, Albi

Sainte-Cécile, Albi

The construction of the cathedral Sainte-Cécile in Albi was ordered by the bishop Bernard de Castanet in 1282 after the violent repression of the cathars led by an alliance between the pope and the king of France, who were considered heretics my the main stream catholic church. This masterpiece in southern gothic style, with a very massive exterior due to its fortified nature, has sumptuous decorations inside. The cathedral is the centerpiece of the episcopal city of Albi, a UNESCO’s World Heritage site.
